PLACES TO VISIT
Mawsmi Cave-Revered as one of the most popular and notable landmarks in Cherrapunji
is Mawsmai cave. The striking natural cave is flocked by visitors in
great numbers. It is one of the best places for history buffs and
experience seekers. The Mawsmai cave in Cherrapunji boasts of wide and
amazing entrance with the dark and magical mystery inside. The limestone
constructions of the cave would surely leave you fascinated.
Seven Sisters Falls-Nohsngithiang Falls (also known as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls or Mawsmai Falls) is a seven-segmented waterfall located 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. The water falls from a height of 315 metres (1,033 ft) and has an average width of 70 metres (230 ft). making it one of the tallest waterfalls in India.
Double Decker Root Bridge- Located in the thick tropical forest of Meghalaya, cloaked with rain
during most part of the year are the fantastic man-made cum natural
wonders of the living root bridges. Created by the people of the Khasi
tribe, these roots grow from the ancient rubber trees, seen only in the
northeast region. These roots are trained by the Khasis to grow in such a
manner as be in the form of bridges on the top of a river. These
bridges are an amazing alternative to wooden bridges that dwindle with
so much rain falling on them. The most popular tourist attraction of
Cherrapunjee, these double decker living root bridges are 2 bridges that
are stacked one on the other, made because of the entanglement of
roots.
Ramakrishna Ashram- The Ramakrishna Mission is an important landmark overlooking
the hills of Cherrapunjee. Started in 1924 by Swami Vivekananda, this institution
has grown into a major tourist attraction.
The sight of the institution catches
the eye of everyone entering Cherrapunjee. The majestic structure of Ramakrishna Mission
is a sight to behold. The vastness and splendour of Ramakrishna Mission can be
gauged from the fact that most of the tourist enquire about the place and are
inquisitive to capture it through their lens.
Dainthalen Falls- The waterfall
derives its name from a Thlen (Khasi word for Python). As
per
the legend, people decided to rid themselves of evil, captured the
Thlen and killed it at the wide flat rock over-looking the waterfall. Adjacent to the very spot where
the Thlen was slaughtered lies the Dain-thlen Waterfalls. Natural rock carvings
of the episode draw visitors to see the image of the Thlen, the symbol of
greed, corruption and evil.
Wah-kaba Falls- It’s a tiered waterfall close to 170-190 m in height and provides a
stupendous beauty of surrounding canyon all around its vista. The fall
lies at a distance of 15 km from Cherrapunjee
towards Shillong. The fall becomes completely invisible during the
winter months with thin streams of water creating a pattern reminiscent
of the crisscross pattern of the hair strands at the back of a woman’s
head. The beauty of this fall comes alive during the monsoon months as
the garrulous water makes its way through huge boulders and vegetation
in and around the canyon. Sometimes heavy mist envelops the entire
canyon and sighting the waterfall turns into a peek-a- boo through the
dense layer. One needs to have a bit of luck and patience to witness its
full glory. There are some good viewpoints all around the canyon to
witness the magnificence of this waterfall.
Wei Sawdong-
The 3 step fall is most beautiful thing I experienced from nature. This is beautiful beyond expression. However it tests your physical ability to enjoy the view. I think it’s 200 meters of steep 75-90 degree trek without any proper stairs. The villagers have made the path and stairs using bamboo trees. This fall is outskirts of Cherrapunjee , near DainThlen falls (Which is very famous). If you are physically fit , this should be in must visit place in Meghalay Trip.

Ka Khoh Ramhah Cherrapunji-
According to legends this rock is a fossilized cone-shaped basket that belonged to an evil spirit. Nevertheless, the beauty of the surrounding areas of Khoh Ramhah is boosted by the water stream that is flowing through the rocks that becomes a waterfall when you spot it from behind. When the day is not cloudy, visitors can even enjoy the views of the plans of Bangladesh. When the clouds rise from the plains and fly past the rock, the sights looks enchanting. Beside the rock is a viewpoint from where one can admire the lovely views. From the back of this giant rock, you can have a view of the winding roads of Cherrapunjee too.
