FALLS AND LAKES TO VISIT DURING SHILLONG TOUR
NOKALIKAI FALLS-
The tallest plunge waterfall height 1115m situated near Cherrapunji "the wettest place on earth" the fall is fed by the rainwater colleted on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December
ELEPHANT FALLS-
Elephant Falls was the British name of what the local Khasi people once
referred to as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (or “Three Steps
Waterfalls”) since the falls actually consisted of three sections in
succession. We learned from a sign here that the British renamed the
falls because there used to be a rock resembling an elephant near the
left side of the main falls (which I think was the bottommost one).
However, that rock was destroyed in an earthquake back in 1897.
MAWPHLANG FALLS-
This calm, serene and magnificent waterfall nestled away in the thick
green forests of Shillong is perhaps the most soul-cleansing experience
you will have in your life! While the waterfall in itself does offer
something unique, it is also the entire environment around it that
creates the magic. The extremely clean and pristine state of the water
also adds to its charm and makes it look like a place right out of your
favourite fairy tale.
This waterfall is the kind of place where you can conveniently take
your lunch basket, sit beside the falling water and gaze at nature in
its purest form as you picnic. The waterfall is surrounded by thick and
flourishing trees on all sides and it does feel like you’re sitting in
the middle of a forest.
BEADON FALLS-
Beadon Falls is one of the twin cascades situated amidst dense
forestation in Shillong's picturesque Suna Valley. It is located about 2
km away from the bustling Bara Bazar area, thus having easy
accessibility from the town's centre.
This waterfall passes through steep rocky formations before merging into the watercourse of the Umiam River. Falling from a high ridge into the deep gorge formed by this river, the waterfall mesmerises visitors with its stunning vista.
